Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. – Lao-tzu
This is a quote that has come to mean a great deal to me. Beginning a weight-loss journey—is exactly that— a lifelong journey. It is difficult, challenging, and sometimes seems impossible but it is extremely rewarding in so many ways. And it truly starts with one single step.
I started almost 3 years ago this March. I had been a gym member for years—using the tread- mill and maybe a few weight machines a couple times a week with zero results. Jenna con- vinced me to join her first bootcamp class—and boy did it take A LOT of convincing! I must have asked Jenna several times ‘do you think I can do this?’. Boot camp was an intimidating word for someone who was overweight, out of shape and had very low confidence.
The biggest factors that were holding me back from achieving my goals were certainly not phys- ical. Sure, I could not hold a plank or do a burpee, but the mentality that I could not do it, the overwhelming feeling of self-consciousness and embarrassment were far more challenging. Can anyone else relate to this? Why is it that our minds have that much power over us? Even after the first couple of classes I felt awkward and self-conscious of my ability to do these activi- ties. It’s hard not to compare your ability to that of everyone else around you. But once I started to see my progress, not only on the scale, but in the improvements in my abilities, it eased my mind a little bit and helped me focus on myself.
Once you overcome the mental barriers, the journey will become easier. It will never be easy, but it will become a part of your lifestyle. I have learned a lot over the past 3 years and I still have a way to go to reach my goals, but I am so glad that Jenna convinced me— she helped me take my first step.
I would love to hear some stories of how you got started! Did you have similar challenges? Please share them in the comments below.
