Long Weekend Survival Tips

Summer is officially upon us! I don’t know about you, but I am excited for the long weekend!

Long weekends tend to bring BBQ’s, patio drinks, cottages, and food… LOT’s of food. So how do you stay on track, when there are so many temptations? It’s difficult, it really is. It’s easy to fall off course when you are surrounded by friends and family and you just want to relax and enjoy yourself.

It’s important to know that you can enjoy yourself and not feel guilty. It’s true what they say, one weekend of indulgence won’t make you fat, just as one weekend of healthy eating won’t make you skinny. It’s all about balance. Go ahead and indulge a little, it’s not the end of the world. The key is to stay in control and get right back on track after the holiday.

Here are some tips to help you keep on track while still enjoying the weekend:
1. Choose low calorie drink options
o Warm weather brings people outdoors. Patio’s or cottage docks are the perfect place to unwind. If you enjoy a cold beverage, whether it’s alcohol or not, choose lower calorie options. There are plenty of options for alcoholic beverages, like light beer, low calorie wine, or use tonic or soda water as a mix. Same goes for non-alcoholic drinks, limit the high sugar sodas and opt for fruit infused water or sodas instead. Order your iced coffee with no sugar base.
2. Stay active.
o This is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of nature. Go on a hike, swim, take a walk along the water, go for a bike ride. There are lots of options to stay active over the long weekend.
3. Plan some healthy meals ahead
o We all like to indulge in some delicious food over the long weekend. It’s inevitable. Plan a few healthy meal and snack options, to help keep you on track. Add a fresh side salad to your BBQ meal. Snack on some fruit salad throughout the day. Keep fresh cut veggies and hummus on hand. Pack a bag of microwave popcorn for a delicious movie snack. Incorporate some healthy options in between the ice cream and marshmellow smores. It’s all about balance!
4. Stay hydrated
o This one is important. Water is essential to keeping you on track for a few reasons. Drinking enough water can help reduce hunger and reduce bloating. Especially if you choose to drink alcohol, drink that extra water. Keep a reusable water bottle on hand to make it easier to access.

It’s been a long winter and as the days get longer, this is a great time to take advantage of the outdoors. Grab your friends and family and get active!
